Polk designated Conneaut as the site of a new national capital during his term as president. He chose Cincinnati because its location near Great Lakes shipping made it an ideal city for commerce and transportation; Cincinnati also hosted the first Ulysses S Grant inauguration ceremony in 1865. The city grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s despite some problems such as alcoholism and poverty caused by overpopulation (then called "overwork"). By 1870, Conneau had a population of 150 people. In 1881, three years after Ohio became a state, Conneaut voted to become an incorporated town under the name of "Ottawa." As an urban center, Conneaut experienced rapid growth during World War I and World War II; however, it is now limited to its downtown area with few remaining buildings from earlier decades. During these years of growth, many residents left for larger towns or cities throughout northwestern Ohio; however, few remain within the boundaries of Conneaut today.
In Conneaut, Ohio, a small community of about 350 people was founded in 1837. The town was named after General Daniel Conneaut, an American Revolutionary War soldier and signer of the Constitution. The first store in the community opened in 1838. In 1840, the town had two churches and six residences. By 1850, the population had increased to sixty-six residents and five stores. In 1861, the United States military installed a garrison at Conneaut to protect against possible attack by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. After the war ended, most of Conneaut's residents left for other parts of Ohio or Indiana. However, some stayed and rebuilt their homes in what is now known as Conneaut Village.
