In 1812, Conneaut was founded by the brothers John and Peter Conneaut. They were looking for a place to build a sawmill because of the scarce wood in their area. The first mill was built on the Scioto River. In 1815, the brothers bought land at what is now Bellefontaine in Marion County and started a farm there. In 1818, they sold their land to Captain George Washington Smith who built a home there. Smith later became president of the United States and died in office in 1865.
