The town of Conneaut, Ohio was founded in 1837 by the parents of a boy who was to become General Joseph Hooker. At that time, the area was part of the Northwest Territory and was named after Captain Conneaut, an Englishman who had explored the region. The first mill in town was built in 1838 and soon became a major player in the local economy. In 1861, when Ohio seceded from the United States, Conneaut became part of Canada. However, as Canadia continued to beenteignly ruled by King George III, there remained some vestige of British influence until 1915 when Queen Victoria issued an Order-in-Council declaring all Canadian townships outside Quebec to be "British." As a result, many aspects of daily life were still governed by British traditions even though most residents now reside within North America. In 1978, Conneaut made national news when its mayor became one of two people - along with Mayor Gary Locke - chosen for inclusion in UNESCO's World Heritage Site program for its significance as both a cultural and historical center for American Indians. From 1984 until his death in 2002, Mayor Coleman Young led the city through several controversial decisions which have been widely condemned including creating what is now known as The Coleman Young Freedom Trail (named after him) and increasing taxes City Council members were then able to pass without public feedback while he languished behind on budget requests. After his death city leaders decided not to pursue any further recognition or funding from UNESCO but did continue development work on The Coleman Young Freedom Trail which has since grown into one of downtowns largest attractions with over 1 million visitors per year. Today much like during Mayor Coleman Young's tenureouns citizens are proud locals and support their hometown through events such as Fourth Of July fireworks displays and annual Pumpkinfest
