The town was abandoned within a year and was replaced by Conneaut when it was chartered as a city on December 12, 1816.
Conneaut is a city in Hancock County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area. A post office called Conneaut was established in 1811, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The name "Conneaut" was derived from the Ottawa word "hancock", which means "brook with trees". The first settler in what became Conneaut Township was John Prentice. He arrived there on July 6, 1812, and built a cabin near the present site of downtown Conneaut. Prentice's cabin is shown on a map dated 1824. In 1825 James Denton moved to Conneaut from Canfield Township and began farming near the current day intersection of High Street and Canal Avenue. Denton's farmstead can still be seen northwest of downtown on Factory Road. In 1830 John Fenton bought land from Denton and founded the town of Fentonville east of downtown where he erected a log courthouse and jail. He named his town after his father-in-law James Fenwick (1794–1868), who had donated land for the community center on which it stands today. In 1840 William Auld purchased land from Fentonville and laid out what is now Highland Park across High Street from Fentonville; this area later became known as Downtown Conneaut. On December 3, 1846, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Braxton Bragg attacked Union forces at Perrysburg concentration camp north of town; most of those killed or captured were buried there by Union troops under terrible conditions until 1865 when they were exhumed and reburied elsewhere within Confederate territory

Conneaut was founded in 1792 by John Conneaut and his wife, Catharine. The town was originally called West Bloomfield because the banks near where it was settled were built on land that had been bought from the Susquehanna River Indians. In 1812, the town name was changed to Conneaut after its first postmaster, James Conneaut. The town's current location is located on a peninsula formed by the confluence of the Mahoning and Maumee rivers. The peninsula is bounded by Water Street on the south side, State Route 128 on the east side, and Cuyahoga Avenue on the north side. The city of Cleveland proper is located to the northwest and northeast of Conneaut. In 1814, Conneaut became one of eighteen towns in Wayne County when it was created from parts of Stroudsburg and Uniontown. In 1825, it became part of Erie County when that county was organized. In 1840, it became part of Lucas County when that county was organized. On October 15, 1845,ConNEAUT became a village through an act of the Ohio General Assembly passed without debate. It had previously been an unincorporated community known as "Old Clinton." On November 3rd 1861 during World War II USS Constitution (1860) sank off shore in Lake Erie; all 25 crewmen lost including Captains James Conneeut and Franklin Roosevelt who died as result of their injuries sustained while swimming ashore
