Conneaut is a city in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 24,811 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Muskegon County. The village of Conneaut was platted in 1827 by George Washington and his brother James Connell as part of the Township of Whiteford (now Muskegon Heights). In 1840, John Marshall, who later served as U.S. Attorney General under President James K. Polk, donated land to form what became known as Marshall Park. The park included a mill and two gristmills on the north side of the river and a sawmill on the south side; it also housed a small school and a hotel until 1881 when it was moved to its present site at East Main Street and Woodward Avenue. In 1871-72, work began on building what would become Michigan State University (MSU), which became one of North America's first comprehensive universities with twelve schools in addition to its medical school and law school while still located in Lansing because that was then the only town inmuskegon county with permanent buildings suitable for college students or faculty. At first called "Michigan Agricultural College", MSU opened its doors on October 17, 1873 with eighty-four male students from fifteen towns and villages within one hundred miles; today it has over 4500 undergraduate students and fifty-six graduate programs across nineteen faculties yielding an economic impact totaling $3 billion annually statewide alone. In 1907-08 local resident Worthy Mott designed Ponce de Leon Boulevard through downtown Conneaut after watching plans for development being made available for what would become Michigan State University near campus; this original boulevard continues as Main Street today. Conneaut was a small town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 514 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1806 by George Conneaut and named for his brother John Conneaut. The first store in town was built on the site of the current intersection of Highways 8 and 130, where it still stands today. The first school in town was built on the corner of Highways 8 and 130A. In 1818, George Conneaut donated land to build a Methodist church which served as the town's first courthouse. Because Conneaut had no children, he bequeathed his entire estate to trustees who would manage it until his death in 1827. In 1830, John Witherspoon moved from Philadelphia to open a general store here with partners Isaac Sawicki and Samuel Hopkinson (the second such store opened in Akron). Witherspoon became known for creating a distinctive type of ice cream that is now popular throughout central Ohio: "Witherspoon's Cream". He also operated an auction house here from 1833 to 1840 before moving west into other businesses. In 1847, Anthony Robbins purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) east of Conneaut from local settler James Fenton for $5,000 cash plus 10% interest each year until it reached $30 per acre payable annually over 20 years; Robbins turned it into what is now Robbins Township (or Rocks Township), taking over all practical aspects of Fenton's life as well as any title or rights thereto including titles to minerals within its boundaries. By 1860, there were only 157 residents living within the limits of present-day Conneaut while 263 others lived scattered around Summit County and parts of Stark County due to immigration by Germans during this time period; however most people hereabouts were farmers who raised livestock or mined coal or limestone hillsides near their homes making them self-sufficient without outside assistance for about three centuries until organized labor arrived with Steeles' Millthreatened closure during World War II because production stopped because wartime production requirements exceeded available resources In 1902 Union Pacific Railroad began construction on tracks through Medina County between Akron and Youngstown; construction lasted until 1903 when trackage linking those two communities necessitated rerouteing old mail routes instead so mail could be delivered more quickly from Akron via Youngstown . A post office called “Connell” opened at milepost 4 on July 7th 1904 under postal jurisdiction established by Congress November 16th 1907 concurrent with establishment of Ashtabula County OH AfterSteeles'Mill closed during WWII due to production exceeding available resources development restarted but again ended due to new economic realities not meeting war production demands
Conneaut was founded in 1787 by the town of Conneaut, Ohio. The community was named for Captain John Conneaut, a Revolutionary War soldier and member of the United States House of Representatives from Meigs County, Ohio. In 1824, the town became a village and in 1827 it became a town.
