Conneaut is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Conneaut was John Burritt in 1795. He and his wife Mary moved from Adams Township to Conneaut after they were married there. He founded a gristmill on the Scioto River and operated it until 1820. In 1827, he sold his mill to James Hays and continued to operate it as Hays' mills until 1861 when it became part of the Brush Foundry Company. In 1871, John Pritchard bought the Brush Foundry Company and continues to run it as a separate business entity today. In 1814, William Lyon built a gristmill on the Scioto River near where Conneaut now stands downstream from Burritt's mill. He operated it until 1830 when he sold it to Andrew Smith for $1,000 cash. Smith used the mill for flour production until 1840 when he sold it back to Lyon for $2,500 cash again. The mills continue in operation until 1915 when they were taken over by Brush Foundry Company who retired them due to wartime restrictions on flour production that had been put into effect by Congress during World War I. In 1907-08, an athletic team called "The Black Hawks" played its home games at North High School which stood at what is now Seventh Avenue West between Main Street and Erie Boulevard NE in what is now downtown Conneaut (formerly known as "Old Town"). The Black Hawks are considered one of the most successful high school teams of all time with wins over many top caliber teams including Notre Dame Prep (now University Park), Stroudsburg Catholic (now Defiance) and Butler High School (now Centerville). After playing their final game againstdefiant on November 16th 1908 before moving into new facilities across Third Street from North High Schoolthe Black Hawks disbanded due largely to financial reasons although some players still play professional football today

In 1803, the United States acquired what is now Erie County from Great Britain through the Treaty of Paris. The land around Conneaut was included in this acquisition and became part of the new county. The population of Conneaut increased rapidly during the 1800s as settlers arrived from all over America to farm and ranch in this area. Today, Conneaut remains a vibrant community with a rich history that is still being experienced today.
