Conneaut is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,879 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dayton–Sylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Conneaut was James Burchard, who arrived in 1795. George Stephenson founded one of the first railroads in America here in 1814. In 1821, Conneaut became a village and was named for John Niles Conneaut, one of the original directors of the Erie Canal Company. In 1837, a group of men from Lancaster County decided to establish themselves as a community in what is now southeastern Lucas County on high ground overlooking the Scioto River. This group was known as "The First Settlers". They named their new town after General Anthony Wayne and his unit during the Battle of Fallen Timbers (September 10–11, 1813). The town quickly grew and by 1839 had its own schoolhouse and militia barracks. By 1840 it had also erected its first stores and homes. The town's growth continued through the 1850s when it formed its own government with an elected mayor and two trustees... Conneaut was a small town in southeastern Ohio, United States, located on the Miami and Erie Canal. The town was founded by John Conneaut in 1800. It became a city in 1902. The population of Conneaut was 9,581 at the 2010 census. In 1806, John Conneaut built the first mill on the canal here. He also founded the village of Conneautville around this same time to serve as a commercial center for his town and its canal properties. The village had a post office from 1807 until it was discontinued in 1908. The original canaljoined the Great Lakes about two miles (3 km) west of present-day Conneaut, but water levels changed so much during construction that the canal finally reached its destination just east of downtown in 1836 when an Army Corps of Engineers project diverted water from Lake Erie to help build the Miami & Erie Canal system. The early years were difficult for Conneaut as economic activity dried up due to lack of access to transportation and competition from larger towns on both sides of the river route connecting Ohio with Kentucky and Indiana. However, with continued effort by residents and entrepreneurs over time, growth began to occur including: becoming one of only two cities in America without incorporation fees; establishment of schools; building more than 10 mills employing 1,500 workers; emergence as an important shipping point for coal mined along the Susquehanna River; and receipt by Cleveland of first railroad grade through what is now downtown Conneauit on July 24th, 1853 - making it possible for businesses near City Hall to ship goods all over Northeast Ohio without having them delivered door-to-door like earlier generations did! "In very deed," writes historian James Wohlgemuth "the Canalside [of] area has come within our limits since Independence." In 1898 City Hall moved from its original location inside what is now First National Bank Park into what is today city hall plaza across from First National Bank which had been donated by banker Clinton Denny who saw potential for development there adjacent to his bank's extensive land holdings - thus beginning what would eventually become known as "Denny's Place." In 1902 City Council decided that it would be unwise to annex neighboring villages such as Highland or Overlook because they had similar namesakes except that their boundaries coincided too closely with those established for city services such as sewers and lights while their citizens were not similarly interested in joining either municipality despite being nearby - later reasoning that if Overlook wanted her own police force then she should have done so whereas Highland simply wanted landfill space! For many years after this decision no annexation occurred even though these villages grew significantly outside city limits adding some 11 square miles (27 km2) onto CONNEAUT'S current territory! This phenomena can still be seen today when looking at maps depicting CONNEAUT'S current boundaries alongside those established back when it first formed behind present day Third Street & State Road 54
Conneaut was founded in 1792 by Captain George Conneaut and his wife, Lydia. The town was named for the Conneauts who had come over from Wales in the early 1800s. The first school was built in 1814. In 1847, the city of Cleveland was created from part of Conneaut and other towns in Medina County.
