Conneaut is a small town in Ohio, United States. It is located in the Athens-Clarke County seat of Athens. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. Conneaut is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Flint, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlement in what would become Conneaut was made by Congregationalist missionaries from New England in 1795. A post office called "Canton" was established in 1805, and remained in operation until 1907. The community name comes from a nearby stream called "Conncannon." At one time, it had a population of 400 people; however, this number decreased over time due to other factors such as railroad construction and availability of jobs elsewhere. In 1870, a lumber yard opened up on the west side of Route 6 near where modern day Manchester Road meets the creek.. This led to an increase in traffic on Route 6 which caused problems for locals who could not get enough work to support their families; as a result, many people moved away from Conneaut and started new lives elsewhere. 2nd Ward Alderman John Fenton took action to try and revive interest in Conneaut by creating two events each year that involved local businesses and residents: an arts night reception and auction (to raise money for local causes) followed by an open house/festooning party on Saturday nights during harvest season (late October). These efforts failed but helped generate some public awareness of the town’s existence while also creating some economic opportunity for locals. In 1906 Quaker Oats decided to move its manufacturing operations out of state due to competition from steel mills opening up across the country; accordingly, all production at the old mill ceased around that time too. However, parts of the building still stand today used as apartments or commercial space by various businesses including PNC Bank and Blue Cross & Blue Shield! In 1932 when National Broadcasting System began airing live programming from their studios atop Goodyear Building downtown they invited representatives from Conneauit into attendance for entertainment purposes only – no shows were ever taped here! Later that same decade General Motors relocated their entire Toledo facility across I-75 into what is now known as OldREP Park – directly across SR 625 from where Connecaunt Elementary School currently stands! This event sparked much civic activity resulting in donations being placed towards new playground equipment and driveway paving projects among others... Although GM never actually built any buildings within city limits they did leave behind evidence including several large pieces of factory machinery which can still be seen parked along SR 625 just beyond OldREP Park today! It wasn't until 1984 when then Mayor Tom Foley introduced legislation designating certain areas within city limits “Historic Districts” which bestowed official status upon properties throughout town including Main Street between Wayne Avenue and US 71 – making it possible for developers interested in rehabilitating or redeveloping these properties to do so without having to come through City Hall!! With this designation came increased access to government funding available through Historic Preservation Tax Credits – allowing more development opportunities for locals!!! In recent years there have been several attempts made by local investors group Incorporate Cincinnati LLC (ICL) seeking approval from City Hall for plans focused largely around redevelopment/renovation rather than Hadley Village like previous attempts… although so far all requests have been rejected!!! Backyard barbecues are popular summertime activities hereabouts especially around late June during early July when temperatures reach significantly higher than average outside!!! Conneaut is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Conneaut was James Cook in 1814. He and his family built a log cabin on the east bank of the Maumee River, about north of present-day Conneaut. Cook named his settlement "Conneaut" after himself and three other settlers who had journeyed there from Connecticut: Nicholas Conrad (1789-1847), John Atherton (1786-1855) and Joshua Chamberlain (1795-1868). The first store moved to its present location on Main Street in 1825; it was the only business open when Macomb County was organized that year. The first school opened for grades one through twelve in 1829; it became an independent school District No. 1 in 1903 with its own building and grounds. In 1830, George Stephenson built a steamboat called "The Rocket" at The Landing on the Maumee River; it transported passengers and freight upriver to Detroit until 1840 when it switched to water transport service between Grand Rapids and Toledo, Ohio. In 1837, connegut Wayne started operating a sawmill near what is now town hall; he also erected a gristmill and flour mill soon afterwards. By 1840, his mills were producing 6 tons per day of flour for local marketplaces as well as exporting to Holland, England and Canada. In 1850 Daniel Darragh started marketing fruit products from his orchard south of town; by 1860 he had adds over 50 acres (20 hectares) of land to produce apples for local markets around Muskegon Heights/Detroit area before moving production westward into Total Ann Arbor Township where he continued operations until his death in 1893. By 1870 Orville Noyes had established a grocery store across Main Street from Stores' Mill which became known as “Noyes”'s Grocery until World War II when it became an OPK department store operated by Pohlmann's Department Store Corporation under license from Northwest Michigan Shopping Company Incorporated.. In 1915 Noyes’ heirs sold their interest to Jens Gjerdingen who operated it until 1984 when it went out of operation due to changes in ownership.. From 1916 through 1951 Knoppers bakery operated out front on 2nd Avenue North opposite High School.. During this time numerous other small businesses existed including Weaver's Furniture located at 515 Wischerein Rd., Benson Clothing located at 413 Saginaw St., Donahue's Bakery & Meat Market located at 421 Saginaw St., Post Office Services - First National Bank - vacated 1957 fire destroyed all records 1935-1957... finally closed 1983 after many years without reopening due to lack of demand... Today only 3 buildings remain standing: Storefronts 1st Ave & Third St.; Storefronts Second Ave & Fourth St.; original homebuilt ca 1865 still stands today used as apartments
