Conneaut is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. The Unincorporated community of Conner is located in the town. The first settlement in what is now Conneaut was made on July 8, 1788 by John Dolan and his brothers James and Patrick Dolan. They were land grantees from Dublin, Ireland. On November 15, 1854, Conneaut became a part of the United States when it was accepted as part of the formative years of Ohio's statehood. The following year, it had a population of 330 people. In 1860 its population had grown to 1,000 people; however by 1870 it had decreased to 500 residents due to increased industry and transportation costs brought on by newly opened railroads in that area. In 1907-1908 local businessman Harry Laughlin built the first successful electric streetcar system in America with cars running on tracks that ran parallel to each other along two main streets - Main Street and Eighth Avenue - within blocks of each other in downtown Conneaut. This system quickly proved popular among residents who could no longer walk or ride their bicycles to their jobsites which were located several miles away on either side of the tracks near what is now known as State Route 716 (now Interstate 74). In 1910 Laughlin donated land for a Jewish Cemetery which still stands today next door east of Main Street between Third and Fourth avenues south-west of downtown Conneauit after being moved there from its original location just northeast of town limits some time prior thereto during an effort by local politicians to reduce competition for cemetery space among small businesses operating within town limits during an era characterized by increasing social tension caused by religious conversion hysteria pandemic influenza pandemic cholera epidemics ). Attendance at services continued unabated until World War I when gas prices dropped so greatly that cemeteries became available once again for sale but never again filled because few new families chose to live close enough to them for burial purposes during those difficult times). In 1847, Congreve rifles were invented by Captain John Congreve during the Peninsular War in Spain. These rifles fires roundshot (a projectile made out of hard lead) with weights between 1/2 pound and 4 pounds that can be aimed either vertically or horizontally by means of an adjustable iron sights on an attached crossbow bolt carrier. By 1853, this type of firearm had replaced traditional handguns as the primary arm for infantry fighting in Europe. During the 1840s, there was a large influx of Germans into Conneaut due to religious reasons. This new population added to the already strong German culture in the town. Businesses grew even more during this time as many new businesses opened their doors to accommodate these newcomers. In 1846, Main Street was renamed “Old Dutch Road” in recognition of all of Conneeaut's original settlers who had contributed so much to its development over time. In 1849, when voting took place for Ohio's statehood, Conneaaud voted overwhelmingly for annexation into Ohio! This news created excitement throughout Northwest Territory and helped spur further development withinConneeaultOWNevelopmentincludingtheestablishmentofa Railroad network that made it possible for farmers to sell their products throughout Northeast Ohio." As settlement increased along Old Dutch Road (later Main Street), so did commerce and industry; however, some negative effects also developed from this change in economic landscape: prostitution became an issue because men could now travel freely without fear of being arrested or worse; crime rates increased because people could now make easy money without risking serious consequences;andsocial tensions increased because people were no longer sharing their ideas or experiences with each other." This rapid expansion led directly to problems since not everyone wanted to be part of what was becoming known as "the big city". Residents who felt left out or marginalized started developing social gangs which competed furiously against each other for control over resources (e.g., drugs) and territories (e.g., housing). These gangs ultimately led to violence on both an individual level (i e., gang warfare) as well as a communal level (i e., inter-gang rivalries). Additionally, some members of these gangs turned criminal due to power struggles among themselves while others simply lost touch with reality entirely."
Conneaut was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Conneaut, a Quaker. The town was named after the Conneaut River, which flows through it. In 1818, the town was moved to its present location on the west bank of the Monongahela River.
