Conneaut is a small town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton-Muncy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known reference to Conneaut was in 1792 when it was spelled "Connaughton". In 1814, Conneaut became the county seat of Cuyahoga County and has remained so since. The town started as a small community on the west side of the dam that formsthe Cuyahoga River. By 1824, there were only 50 residents living in what is now Conneaut Township and just six buildings had been constructed by that time. In 1825, Congress passed an act providing for government withinauga (now Muskegon) County and for a new county seat in each such county; Conneaut was chosen as the new county seat. A group of men from Conneauit organized a village site on high ground between High School Road and Springvale Road east of present day Interstate 75 near where Wabash Avenue meets Ulysses S Grant Boulevard today. From this village site grew into what is now downtownConneaaut with its three blocks long main street and numerous smaller streets radiating out from it including South Union Street which runs parallel to I-75 across from DowntownConneaaut until it reaches its southern terminus at State Route 131 near where US 460 intersects I-75 today On November 3, 1830, an act was passed by Congress under which all township elections were to be held on December 15th instead of January 7th because January 7th was then Christmas Day. This Act provided for concurrent election campaigns between citizens who lived within 10 miles of each other instead of having to vote separately for township officers. As a result of this change in election law, voters in townships located more than 10 miles from their respective cities or villages began to move into those larger communities during the 1830s; this led to what is now called “urbanization”of township governments throughout eastern Ohio
