In the late fifteenth century, a man named Christopher Columbus was searching for a new route to India. He became lost in the New World and was finally found by Admiral Isabella de Porto on November 11, 1492. The admiral invited Columbus to settle in her territory of Hispaniola and help explore the area. Columbus set out from his ship La Niña on October 12, 1493 and arrived at what is now known as San Salvador Island on January 8, 1494. He explored this island and then sailed northwestward until he reached present-day Haiti on February 2, 1494. From here, he sailed northeastward until he reached Puerto Rico on July 4, 1494. From there he sailed southeastward until he reached Cuba on September 16th. He then sailed south to Trinidad before making his way back north to Spain where he reported his findings to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in November of that year. Theyapproved his request for exploration of America with the goal of finding a new route to India. Columbus returned home (now Havanas) in May 1501 but died two weeks later after being crushed while trying to return home..
The first European to explore and settle in what is now Columbus, Ohio was Giovanni da Verrazzano, a Italian explorer and navigator. on September 14, 1541 he landed on the present site of the city and named it after his patron saint, Saint Lorenzo de'Medici. The first European to visit the area was John Trumbull who explored in 1611. In 1795, General James Grant purchased land east of the Scioto River from the local Native American tribe in order to establish Fort Stroudsburg. On November 12, 1814, during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), General Winfield Scott invaded central Ohio looking for an opening into Mexico City through which to invade Mexico. In 1847 Congress passed a resolution granting United States citizenship to all of California including parts of Ohio. Consequently, part of what is now Columbus became part of California as well.
