In 1812, Ohio Captain George Whitefield founded the town of Columbus on the Scioto River. In 1837, General John Scott replaced Whitefield as the first governor of Ohio and authorized the construction of a military post at West Point on the Scioto River. The post became an important strategic location in the War of 1812 because it was located near key Indian villages and could provide support to American forces while they fought against Canada. In 1847, Columbus became a city and its first mayor, James M. combined with other mayors from Cincinnati and Toledo to form the First Municipal Communications Commission which created what is now known as FCC (Federal Communications Commission). On January 1, 1947, Columbus became part of Cleveland after its annexation by that city.

On his trip, he named the area America after the Roman god Amerigo Vespucci. Although it would be centuries before an American village was erected on the site of present-day Columbus, Ohio, many clues suggest that early settlers may have known of and visited this city long before its founding in 1786. Columbus didn't know how to find his way around so he took a map with him as he crossed the ocean and then spent weeks trying to find his original route back home. In all likelihood, Columbus's maps were lost or destroyed along with his tapes of directions while he was exploring these new lands. However, evidence suggests that someone had knowledge of the area and likely visited here shortly before or during his journey across the ocean - possibly Native Americans! Spain claimed sovereignty over much of North America following their victory in The War of Jenkins Ear (1565-75). Spain wanted control over this lucrative trade route with Europe which connected Asia through South America and Mexico City; they also needed access to resources like silver and gold hidden in those regions. To gain this powerbase they turned their attention towards their old enemy England which controlled Wales across most of Scotland...and thus gave Spain control over most of what is now Ohio including parts today known as Cincinnati and Westerville (near Dayton). In 1786 George Washington became commander-in-chief at Fort Necessity on Miami River near modern day Cincinnati. As part of his duties as Commander in Chief, Washington issued orders for construction of a road from fort to fortostation along the river between Fort Necessity and Chillicothe (now Covington), thereby providing more easily accessible transportation for goods being transported through this region. This initiative led directly to Columbus' arrival in search for a new routes out west - something we can only speculate about!
