Columbus, Ohio was founded by Christopher Columbus on November 12, 1492 as the tiny Village of Debaraga. It would be another twenty years before the first European settlers arrived in what is now known as Columbus, Ohio. The area that would become Columbus was inhabited by the Shawnee and other Native Americans for many centuries. In 1614, after a dispute with the English government over rights to a piece of land in what is now Ohio, French explorer and fur trader La Salle claimed part of the Great Lakes region for France. In 1619, after another dispute with England over grants from Quebec City, France sent its own envoy to America to explore possible lands east of Lake Ontario. On September 6th, 1623, while surveying this newly discovered land via his new Clermont-Ferry Building at Newport because it had been unoccupied since 1598 when French controlled Canada and became known as New France (the Péninsule Française), Pierre Le Moyne discovered an opening between present day Delaware and Pennsylvania which he called "The Fairest Place on Earth." The next year he explored further and named it after his patron saint: Saint George. In 1627–28 Diego Velázquez sailed from Spain through the Straits of Gibraltar into English waters searching for new trade routes to India. He sighted both islands now known as Florida and Bermuda off the coast of North Carolina; but decided not to visit them because they did not look like any other land he had seen before. Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto also traveled along this route in search of a direct route to Asia but never found anythinglike success either. By 1629 exploration by Dutchman Willem Janszoon had shown that there were no impediments barring travel downriver past present-day Michigan into central Illinois; so on March 1st Janszoon's expedition set out from Amsterdam en route toChicago with four ships commanded by Hendrick Hudson (Hudson's older brother). From Holland's trading post at Mackinac Island they voyaged upriver until they reached their destination on April 10th whereupon they landed on shore near what is now Detroit without being detected by local Indians who thought them strange white men coming ashore looking for trade goods only to leave again soon after without any goods or discovery! Thereafter Hudson's Expedition continued upstream under command of Captain John Stuyvesant through Rouge River valley until reaching their current location near modern Buffalo on July 24th
The first Europeans to set foot in the present-day Columbus, Ohio area were the French in 1614. The area that is now Columbus was part of the French colony of Canada and was visited by Native Americans on a number of occasions. In 1795, when Ohio became a U.S. state, it became part of the Northwest Territory and was ruled by the United States Congress. The first European settler in what is now Columbus was James Kapp, who arrived in 1792 as part of an expedition led by George Washington.
