However Portugal's defeat at the Battle of Lepanto prevented any further Portuguese conquest until 1624 when India finally fell under British rule after centuries of Portuguese hegemony

In 1795, George Washington and his army reached what is now Columbus after marching through the Northwest Territory. On July 4, 1807, American Commodore John Hawkins discovered the Ohio River and made a landing on its banks. The following year, America acquired control of this land from Spain as part of Treaty of Paris.
