The Columbus, Ohio rifle company was founded in 1878 by a group of men including George Romney. The company manufactured rifles and pistols for the military and law enforcement until 1949. In 1978, the Columbus Rifle Company merged with Brownells Incorporated to form Brownell’s Firearms Corporation. From 1950-1954, Brownells also manufactured firearms for the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. After World War II, gun control measures were enacted in America and Europe that led to a decline in demand for shooting sports equipment. However, this did not stop Columbus from manufacturing firearms until 1949 when it merged with Brownells to become Brownell’s Firearms Corporation. The company continued to produce handguns until 1984 when it was sold to American Outdoor Brands Incorporated. Today, American Outdoor Brands is headquartered in Springfield, Virginia and employs over 800 people across seven factories worldwide. Santa Clara County included what are now Delaware Township, Adams Township, East Cleveland, Franklin Township, Parkersburg Borough (later Parkersburg),Richmond Heights (later Arlington Heights), Washington Township (later Uniontown), North Olmsted Township (later Medina). On March 4, 1815 President James K. Polk approved New Madrid Expedition--a survey expedition led by Major General Zachary Taylor that mapped out a new course for American exploration across central Mexico--and appointed George Hocking Lieutenant Colonel commandant at Fort Mifflin near Presque Isle Island in Lake Erie as commander of this expedition under General William Henry Harrison's orders from Washington Territory northward along Lake Ontario past Niagara Falls into Canada until he reached Lake Erie or Oswego Bay on January 25–29 1816; after reaching Oswego Bay Harrison decommissioned his army because winter quarters had not yet been established there and returned to Washington Territory October 3rd via Buffalo Niagara Frontier Trail
