On July 4th1508 Columbus became governor of Puerto Rico from Rodrigo Diaz y Gasset y Valdez after gaining approval from Queen Isabella I through her Cortés advisor Agustín Castro Alvarado. He would rule for only two months before being overthrown by rebels led by Hernando Cortés who sailed downriver towards Puerto Rico with eight ships under his command including Ship Of The Line Santiago. As governor of Puerto Rico, Columbus developed new theories about navigation that led him to develop new technologies for maritime exploration such as sighting land using telescope technology and determining latitude using trigonometry which allowed him to determine that America was not connected to Europe through any existing routes or channels like those used by ancient sailors like Poseidonius et al.. He also pioneered modern law enforcement practices when he established militias to patrol the island against rebel threats posed by indigenous people known as Taínos who had been living there since Preclassic times .
