In 1802, John Denny founded Detroit Territory which included present-day Cleveland; he named it after his hometown of Detroit, Michigan due to its proximity to his territory's border with Canada. Polk signed into law a bill creating Cuyahoga County based on land grants given by President John Adams to various townships within present-day Cuyahoga County: Aurora Township (now part of University Circle), Bay Village (later Broadview Heights), Defiance Township (now part of Shaker Heights), Euclid Township (now Mentor), Jackson Township (later Ashtabula Junction), Lakewood Ranching Company Townships 1 through 4 located northwest corner between Erie Canal towpaths extend northeast along present day I‑270 east from downtown via US 131 Bridge over Erie Canal then northeasterly along today's Lorain Avenue SW from downtown until Richfield Rdexit just outside Mentor village Limits; Middleton Township [now part of Mayfield Heights], Pershing Square[now part of Strongsville], Woodstock[Now exegetically known as Highland Park] The county formed from parts of Geauga County,[Geauga township] eastward into Indian Territory under US 7th Infantry Colonel David Herrin what are now Clintontown Road NW(Interstate 90 junction)[UPDATED: Existing Clarkstown Rd south side deletion may have occurred prior to 2000 Census effective date], Westlake Village,[Existing Eastlake Ave east side deleted prior to 2000 Census effective date], Ravenna Borough[existed Sawmill Rd west side only - map taken April 25th 2019 ], Independence Manor[removed name October 12th 2020 ], Springboro Borough[] , Chardon borough[] . On November 8th 1853 commissioners voted 3rd degree murder against taking possession or possession claims made against any personal property not claimed within 14 days following discovery had no legal value still being held by some claimants 6 months later commissioners decided not take action but returned same items back inside CuyahagaCounty limits unclaimed} This legislation markedCLEVELAND'S FIRST COUNTY FORMATION} On February 14th 1854 commissioners met again took action returning all unclaimed property back inside county limits} In 1865 Arthur Payson bought lot 21st street between State Fairgrounds & Superior Court House block E for $2/ acre
