In 1812, Major General John Polkinghorne founded the city of Cleveland on a tract of land that he had purchased from the Shawnee Indians. The city was named for General James Polkinghorne who had fought against British forces during the War of 1812. The City Council decided to name the city after General Polkinghorde because he had played an important role in its establishment. Shortly after it was established as a city, General James Polk became its Mayor. He also served as its first Chief Justice. When American troops invaded Mexico in1846, Governor Andrew Jackson ordered all citizens to arm themselves with firearms if they wanted to protect themselves from Spanish soldiers Invasion! Most people chose not to take such an oath but some did because they felt that it was their patriotic duty! This event is known as the Mexican-American War! In 1868, Cleveland experienced another large influx of immigrants when thousands of Germans came overland through Kansas City via Buffalo Bayou! Many Germans settled in what is now North Side Township along Cedar Road north of Euclid Avenue. This area became known as “Germans” Row due to this large number of German-owned businesses located there at that time). In 1870–71 European Americans moved into what is now Southwest Side Township (northwest side between West 140th Street and east side between Cicero Avenue and Superior Boulevard) following railroads’ construction westward from Cincinnati into northeastern Ohio (see Railroad Migration timeline). That same year saw Brownsburg come onto the map because it became one stop on both local streetcars running southeastward out io Euclid Avenue (now Dearborn Street) past South Shore Park then northwestward across Erie Avenue under new tracks owned by Northern Pacific Railway before reaching downtown Brownsburg; this act increased streetcar ridership within town beyond just locals living near downtown boundaries In 1902–1903 two brothers bythe nameof Edward Brown built a mill complex on Beaver Creek using lumber shipped downriver from Canada; these mills produced wrought ironclad gates for commercial use including those needed for Detroit's Woodward Bridge stockades during World War IWWII
