In 1803, John Brown moved his business to Euclid Avenue and began manufacturing pistols there. By 1805, Brown had established himself as one of the leading firearms manufacturers in the area. With advancements in technology, Browns products became more sophisticated and he eventually became known as the "father of modern handguns." In 1814-1817, during the Napoleonic Wars, Cleveland sided with France against England. As a result, several French guns were brought into town and retailed at low prices to American soldiers stationed hereabouts. After Napoleon's defeat, many French weapons were confiscated by British troops and never returned to their rightful owner. This led to increased demand for American arms within Ohio and caused Browns production capabilities to expand rapidly. One such product was the revolver which he introduced into general use in America in 1837-38. Another early firearm manufacturer in Cleveland was Solomon Mathers who produced rifles under license from Colt Firearms Company (now Smith & Wesson). The first white settler arrived by boat from New York City on April 12, 1813 with 300 others aboard the USS "Mohawk" under command of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. On November 8, 1814, General Anthony Wayne fought a three-day battle at Grand River Heights located south of downtown Cleveland against Confederate forces led by Simon Bolivar Randolph (1802-1877). The battle resulted in a Union victory but did not bring about independence for Ohio until December 11th when James Kensey surrendered at Sandusky Junction following negotiations that took place between General Nathan Bedford Forrest (1820-1920) and Ulysses S Grant (1822-1909). The Battle of Antietam off Fort Donelson on September 16th 1862 resulted in a Union victory; however it did not lead to independenceto Ohio until November 9th when John Brown Surrendered at Harpers Ferry followed by Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address delivered two days later: "4 score and 7 years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."
