Cleveland Heights was founded by a group of Englishmen in 1814 as an agricultural village on the east side of present-day Cleveland. The village grew to become a withstood center for manufacturing and commerce, dominating economic life on its peninsula across Lake Erie until it was displaced by Detroit in 1921. In 1960, following years of civic activism and expansion through annexation of neighboring towns, Cleveland Heights became its own municipality with a population over 100,000. Today, Cleveland Heights is known for its cultural diversity and vibrancy; its rich history has attracted artists, literary figures, activists, scientists and others to its neighborhoods since the late 19th century. The name "Cleveland" is derived from a location on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River where General George Washington's army rested during his military campaigns against Native Americans. American settlers first named their settlement after Sir John Hawkins (1624-1702), governor general of England who had been sent to help quash Indian uprisings in what is now western Pennsylvania during King James II's War (1688-1689). Hawkins had sailed downriver from Kingston upon Hull several days before Washington's force arrived on October 11th 1701 to find that those occupying Fort Niagara had destroyed all but four crates of supplies cached there by traders seeking refuge from British taxes levied at this site—a situation that underscored how much strategic importance Niagara played for both sides. After negotiations led by Chief Justice Marshall (1703–1758) resulted in Hawkins receiving 1125 acres (500 ha) along with £5Outputs payable each year into his estate as part of payment for helping suppress Indian insurrections on Canada's eastern border—a gift which helped start laying the foundation for later Polish settlements within what would become Cleveland—the settlers renamed their village "Cleveland." This name change followed extensive surveys performed by Colonel David Denny (1749–1823), surveyor general under President George Washington who ordered construction begun on opposite banks of river then still part Of Canada near today’s University Circle—-the first major public works project undertaken in what would become United States territory.—Denny found that many current residents were descended from Huguenots who had fled France during religious persecution under Louis XIV (1665- 1715). thus providing additional justification for naming their town after one such significant early settler… Today’s Brownsville neighborhood once again takes its name formative events leading up to modern day Cleveland: land purchased from Delaware Indians ceded back to themlayers pursuant to Treaty OF Hopewell ending French presence within Ohio beginning around 1763 – purchase including 6 lots totaling .75 acres lot #1 being purchased at $27 per acre plus 4% interest & $3/year dues paid off set aside specifically for “Treaty Purchase Fund” established earmarked specifically For extinguishing claims held by French Canadians living On Our Side Of The River By means Of Pontiac Purchase(dated 3/2/1763) – Note: All Lots Included In Above Transaction As Well As Lot #6 Which Was Sold To Mr John Smedley Prior To Its Acquisition By The City.)

The city has a population of over 160,000 residents and is home to several universities and business districts.
In the late 1800s, Cleveland Heights was a farming community and rural area. The first person to live in Cleveland Heights was Alexander Caldwell, who came from Scotland in 1801. He founded a farm on the southeast corner of High and Euclid Streets. In 1814, he married Anna Maria de Toft, also from Scotland. They had two children: John and Eliza Caldwell. The first post office in Cleveland Heights was established in 1821. The first store in Cleveland Heights was opened by James McCabe in 1840. By 1850, there were 11 businesses in Cleveland Heights - six stores, one inn, and three blacksmiths. In 1881, Arthur Ashe moved to Cleveland Heights and opened an ice cream parlor called "The Blizzard" on East 79th Street near First Avenue. After serving as President of Syracuse University (1924-1929), Ashe donated land for the university's new campus on what is now Iona College Road near Superior Boulevard. By 1925, when it became clear that the city of Cincinnati would not provide any more money for local education initiatives such as public schools or streetlights, many residents of Cleveland Heights decided to move away from their agricultural roots and become city dwellers instead. Many of these city-dwellers started companies such as Quality City Paper Company (founded 1922), Copley Lumber Company (founded 1923), American Rubber Manufacturing Company (founded 1929), Holmes Committee Printing Press (founded 1937) and others which remain active today within the greater Cleveland Hills area!
