The Cleveland Heights Optical District was established in 1917 as a result of the efforts of Mayor George Crosbie and City Crier Harry L. Fenton. The district included seven businesses, including an optical store, that exchanged products with other businesses in the city. In 1932, the city purchased the seven businesses for $5,000 and made them into the Cleveland Heights Optical District Corporation. The company continued to operate as a municipally-owned business until it was sold to Wernher Böttger in 1961.

Cleveland Heights is one of two towns in Cuyahoga County that are both located on the city's eastern border and share a common ZIP code (21622). The other is Euclid. The first settlers to Cleveland Heights were Methodists who arrived in 1814. They built their first home on Broad Street near what is now Greenfield Road. The Methodists left after a few years because they did not like how their town was being developed around them by the city of Cleveland. In 1846, Augustus Wilson founded the City of Cleveland as an experimental township adjacent to his own landowning community of Mentor on the east side of Lake Erie. Wilson wanted to see if he could make it work without having to worry about people moving away and disrupting his social life there. He named his new town for himself – Cleveland Heights – although some early residents believe it may have been named for General Andrew Jackson’s plantation near Memphis, Tennessee where he had lived before becoming president in 1828. In 1860, Union forces burned down part of downtown Cleveland while fighting Confederate troops during the American Civil War; this destroyed many buildings including Wilson’s former home which still stands today as one of downtown’s most memorable landmarks. In 1865, following the end of the war, Brownsville became part of Cleveland and much later homeless veterans camped outside its boundaries for several months until moved into local homes within walking distance from downtown during Reconstruction-eraCLEVELAND HEIGHTS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION Incorporating all those who purchased or rented property within 500 feet OF DOWNTOWN FROM MAY 1ST 1964 TO DECEMBER 31st 1974

The first European settlers in what is now Cleveland Heights were Frenchmen who came to trade with the local Native American nations during the 17th century fur trade period. A group of British traders called "The Company" arrived here around 1800 to establish trading posts along present day I‐75 and US‐21 near where now downtown Cleveland stands today as part of their effort to open up new frontiers for commerce and settlement westward into what are now Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). This site is located at current location of State Street & Superior Avenue just south east of Center City Park/Downtown today After years leading up to this momentous event two citizens met at President Grover Cleveland's home on May 3rd 1896 – Samuel Tilden & Augustus Kelley – who laid out plans for what would eventually become CLEVELAND HEIGHTS The following year they applied for incorporation under that name which was granted with only 9 voting members due to lack of space but soon renamed “Cleveland” because then Mayor David Goodrich felt that “cleveland” sounded too much like Cincinnati and he preferred “Cleveland” while still keeping its history alive
The first Europeans to explore the area that is now Cleveland Heights were French and Indian traders. The area was part of the British Empire until 1783, when it became a part of the United States of America. Cleveland Heights was established in 1802 as a village on the edge of what is now downtown Cleveland. It grew rapidly after becoming a county seat in 1827 and by 1851 had over 6,000 residents. In 1870, Cleveland Heights became an incorporated city and continued to grow quickly. The population peaked at 26,811 in 1920 and has since declined slightly to 22,471 as of 2011.
