A Rapid Transit line called the "Cleveland Heights Line" served Cleveland Heights until it was closed in 1976. The area has since seen growth as a result of new development and redevelopment. The first residents of what would become Cleveland Heights were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1814. Over time, other European immigrants followed, including Germans, Irish Catholics, Italians and Poles who had come to work on farms or build homes. By 1830, there were more than 100 people living in Cleveland Heights. The earliest buildings in what would become Cleveland Heights were log cabins thatched with hickory leaves and built by local farmers for their families. In 1834, one such farmer named John Cuyler donated land to establish a village on his farm which became known as Cuylerville after him. The village grew quickly and by 1840 had about 60 residents. In 1845, the Village Board approved plans for a town center within the limits of Cuylerville which would include a school house and two stores; however, no action was taken on the plan due to financial difficulties experienced by the board at that time. A few years later, another group of developers purchased property near where our current 24th Street sits and began developing what would become known as downtown Cleveland Heights into an exciting commercial district full of businesses such as banks (First National Bank Building), theaters (Shaw Theatre) and department stores (Eldon Corporation Store). At this point in history Downtown Brownsburg was just an agricultural area surrounded by forested hillsides with no real market potential outside of providing access to transportation routes being developed then catered primarily towards Toledo via Lake Erie Railroad lines running throughCLEVELAND HEIGHTS tonight

The first settlers were Methodists and other religious groups who erected a small chapel on the edge of what is now known as Prospect Park. In 1825, John Richardson founded the city of Cleveland and granted land to several churches, including First Methodist Church, which he had himself built. In 1828, Richardson donated land to the Presbyterian Church. By 1830, there were over 100 families living in Cleveland Heights. In 1840, when Ohio became a state, the area around present-day Cleveland Heights was included within the newly created city of Cleveland. The population of Cleveland Heights grew rapidly during this period due to its location near Lake Erie and its access to jobs in manufacturing and trade routes. The development of businesses in Cleveland Heights led to increased poverty and crime rates among residents. However, many young people found success through their education or work opportunities. In 1851, members of the Methodist Episcopal church formed a congregation called Stowe Methodist Episcopal Church on Prospect Avenue NW by request of Reverend Drury Nelson who lived nearby on Clyffe Street NW with his family since 1796 (when they acquired land from Colonel Anthony Wayne). Reverend Drury Nelson's donation allowed for growth within Stowe Presbyterian until it could become its own congregation in 1865 under Revocation Order No.(3) This signifies that although some early Stowe Methodist Episcopal members may have been affiliated with other denominations at different times throughout their lives (e.g., Congregationalist before 1850), they eventually became self-governing congregations following revocation order no.(3). After years of growth and consolidation within her own denomination(s), Stowe Presbyterian finally achieved full independence from her predecessor organization in 1898 (#4) after seeking approval from both national denominational authorities (#5) as well as from each individual congregation (#6). Today, more than one hundred years later, Stowe Presbyterian remains an active member congregation located within downtown Cleveland Heights with nearly 2200 baptized members across all confession lines (including Presbyterians/ congrarians/ Reformed Dutch Reformed/ Lutheran; United Synod - independent Baptist Churches; Unitarian Universalist Churches; these are not mutually exclusive confessions)).
