It opened its doors to students in 1846 under then- Mayor James Kappler’s leadership with instruction from prominent educators such as Dr. Samuel Jourdan (the first African American to receive an academic degree from Colgate University). The city grew rapidly during the late 1800s thanks to heavy industry along with increasing transportation options like Lake Shore Boulevard and Erie Canal which attracted workers away from rural areas in search of new opportunities within walking distance of factories or trains that dropped them off right outside their door at Wabash Terminal on Euclid Avenue near 27th Street (now FirstEnergy Stadium). This industrial boom caused many homes to be built using brick Georgian Revival style architecture typical for wealthy suburbs outside Chicago during this time period – something that still exists today around downtown Cleveland despite being appreciated for its architecture more than 30 years ago! In 1870s Henry Clay Frick constructed his mansion at 7200 Euclid Ave., which he named "Frick's Tower." It served as both a home and office for Frick throughout his life (he also owned other properties in nearby neighborhoods). In 1888–89 John Husted built him another home at 6500 Ephraim Road (Husted House), which still stands today and is used as a museum/research center on race relations in America during this time period. Both homes remain among Frick's most prominent properties within Cleveland Heights today. On October 16th, 1903 violence broke out between members of two ethnic groups living within Columbus Circle: Poles vs Italiansjobbing each other over food stamps while eating ice cream cone at Hyde Park Corner Social Clubhouse on First Street just north of East 149th Street: A fight escalated into physical altercation resulting in three wounds inflicted upon one Italian national (now Immaculate Conception Parish Priest) before fleeing with his date Gilda Pappalardo; five Poles were arrested including future Mayor George Creighton; fifty-six citizens took part including twelve policemenThe following morning newspapers reported that “a series of terrible attacks” had been committed overnight against menagerie @ 8100 block Adams Ave., ensuing “a wholesale massacre” consisting “of mothers with infants cradled protectively around them . . . all their property destroyed or burned down" creating "considerable excitement throughout the city" NYPD closed streets leading up to Franklin Park until further notice while City Marshal James Fenton escorted blacks out Armory located at 5800 Vine St.; initial reports said fires started accidentally when police responded to calls for service but later determined arsonIt remains one of America's worst race riots ever caused death toll = 3
