In 1836, when Euclid Avenue was designated as trunk road leading north from downtown Cleveland to University Circle (then called Campus Circle), Principal Josephine Baker donated her lot on which she lived until her death in 1896 for use as a public square and educational center within Parkside Park adjacent to Lake Erie; today's intersection of Euclid Avenue and University Drive forms the centerpiece of this square parcel . The City of Cleveland annexed portions of Akron Township including parts of central Cuyahoga County on February 15th 1904 under an act approved by Congress . The annexation did not include all or any portion east or west side lying within present day Cuyahoga County
