Cleveland Heights is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, on the north side of Cleveland. The population was 83,372 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Greater Cleveland and one of the most populous cities in Ohio. It is also one of five municipalities that make up Cleveland City Hall, which is located on Euclid Avenue between Fifth and Sixth Streets in downtown Cleveland. The other four are nearby Akron, Canton, Youngstown and Warren Township. In 1836, General James K. Polk founded what is now Chardon Hills to be a location for his new military academy called West Point Military Academy after he had been elected President of the United States that year. He named it for his home county – Cuyahoga County – because there was no point having two military academies in different counties within Ohio since West Point would soon become an American warship flagship school with branches all over America. At first only 3-4 students were admitted each semester but soon began admitting more students from throughout America due to its excellent educational opportunities then offered by any other institutions at that time including public universities like Yale or Princeton (later Princeton University). In 1841 West Point itself became an institution with full academic standards while still enrolling only 3-4 students per semester though its physical dimensions grew greatly as did its enrollment thanks to appropriations from Congress through legislation known as "The Gadsden Purchase" which gave Army officers preference over civilians when filling high ranking civilian posts in Mexico during that period known as The Mexican War (1846-48). In 1892 Cleveland Heights annexed part of neighboring Warren Township along with much of what is now Canton and Eastlake neighborhoods ending 100 years of separate municipal existence within just a few miles radius around downtown Cleveland! This annexation means that today’s residents form about 60%+ identity with their original hometown/neighborhood although some may maintain close ties both locally & nationally with people from Akron/Canton/Youngstown etc., especially during large events such as Columbus Day Parade or 4th Of July fireworks displays across town! The late 1800s thru early 1920s were very difficult economic times for many Americans due to worldwide recession caused by: 1) continued gold commodity prices hikes; 2) Panic investments following fire sale & bankruptcies among banks nationwide consequent to debt deflation leading to joblessness amongst menial laborers (& women); 3)War production disruptions resulting from changes in technology leading to soldiers leaving fronts where they could have easily served & valuable skills gained if returned (euphemistically called "the Great Mutiny"); 4) Domestic problems caused by increasing numbers of immigrants coming into country seeking employment rather than assimilating; 5)Political instability stemming from scandals & civil unrest culminating into open warfare (WWI 1914-1918). Many saw this situation as a great opportunity for foreigner landowning elites who had dominated politics for centuries - namely those descended from English nobility -to take control again! They did not need help getting reelected so they passed laws restricting voting rights&limiting education opportunities blacks, Jews, Catholics etc., creating conditions ripe for organized crime activities spearheaded by local politicians looking out For Themselves instead Of Their constituents! During these tough times many families desperate enough took whatever jobs could be found even if it meant being employed dolefully cleaning homes or working odd jobs long hours without benefits or health insurance!!! Contrast this behavior 30 years later when many young adults today are afforded identical access to quality education through universities regardless of race or ethnicity!!! These days we call this “The American Dream”!!!!!!
In 1892, Cleveland Heights was annexed by the city of Cleveland. The annexation created a new city government and gave the area a larger population. In 1912, Cleveland Heights became part of the newly formed University City district. After years of growth and development, in 1932 Cleveland Heights voters approved an ordinance creating a municipal government for the community. The first mayor of this new municipality was A.E. Smith. In 1984, the Municipal Reform Authority handed over management of Cleveland Heights to its successor organization, the City Councilman's Association Incorporated (CCA). This change in ownership led to many changes in how CCA ran CCDC which has kept it one of Ohio's most active civic organizations ever since. Today, Cleveland Heights is home to over 60 businesses including several large technology companies as well as many small businesses and organizations with a wide range of interests and missions
