In 1813 two brothers named William Jackson and Joshua Fry established their farmstead known as Eastlake Village near what is now University Circle after purchasing land from Simon Cameron and others east of present-day Lake Erie Boulevard. They became quickly known as pioneers because they developed what would become the capital district for Cuyahoga County - which included Euclid Avenue between Clinton Avenue and First Street - which had been unorganized territory under British rule prior to its annexation by Ohio in 1803 CE In 1865 when Ohio became a state, Cleveland Heights became part of much larger CLEVELAND MUNICIPALITY . By 1890 it had an area of , consisting mostly of undeveloped swampy land along Price Boulevard north of I-480 east to Stiles Road south to Greenville Road west to Euclid Avenue south and east to Vine Street north (now State Route 3)

It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Cleveland Heights was first settled by Native Americans in the 1790s. The first settlers were mainly landholders and fur traders who purchased or leased tracts of land from the nearby Seneca Nation. Eventually, many skilled artisans and entrepreneurs came to live in what is now Cleveland Heights due to its strategic location onhorizontal soil rich in resources that produced corn, wheat, tobacco, iron ore and other minerals. In 1803, when Ohio became a state, Cleveland Heights was included within the newly formed county of Cuyahoga County. However, until 1835 it remained part of Middletown Township (now unincorporated). By 1850 there were over 1,000 people living in Cleveland Heights proper while only about 100 lived outside of it on major roads leading into town. The city’s growth began with its annexation by Cuyahoga County in 1853 following a vote by voters on April 15th referendum This action made Cleveland Heights an official municipal borough with full local government power including fire protection and police services as well as taxation and street maintenance . In 1862 the first school building was built within what is now downtown Cleveland Heights; this building served as the county courthouse until 1959 when it replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed during violence associated with World War II . In 1898 construction began on what would become one of America’s most iconic landmarks –CLEVELAND HEIGHTS POLICE STATION – serving both residents and visitors alike for more than 50 years beginning with its dedication ceremonies on July 14th , 1928 In 1957 several new buildings were erected along Euclid Avenue which formerly served as downtown Akron’s commercial center ; these structures are still standing today including “the Tower” which once housed the Akrotiri Correctional Institution before being sold to Mayor Frank Jackson for use as his private residence . Today numerous businesses line Euclid Avenue between Wilson Boulevard west of Campus Martius Road and West Third Street east of State Route 922 .. These include Starbucks Coffee Company (), Penney's Department Store (), Goudreau's Irish Pub (), Sam's Club () and KFC (). The cluster around Euclid Avenue has come to be known collectively as “Downtown” because virtually all large businesses located there are open 24/7
