Clayton is a small town in Northwest Ohio, United States. The population was 3,754 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Muncie metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Clayton Township was George Washington Brown in 1824. The township was organized on December 11, 1827, and named for General John Clayton who served as a brigadier general in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1881, Clayton became part of the newly formed Trumbull County. In 1907, when Cleveland annexed Trumbull County, it included all of present-day Clay Township and almost all of what is now Youngstown Township as well as parts of Sandusky and Lucas counties. In 1916, when Cleveland again annexed Trumbull County, Clay Township reverted to its original boundaries with Youngstown Township within it once again becoming an independent municipality under its own governance and government structure until 1959 when it merged intoAkron–Canton–Muncie metropolitan area by order of then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower with portions of Lucas and Sandusky counties also joining it within that area. Today's downtown Clayton features a variety of businesses including banks (five main branches), several restaurants and cafes along with multiple retailers including two large department stores - JCPenney and Sears Roebuck - as well as smaller boutiques and mini-marts throughout the town center which anchors one side of Main Street between Second Avenue North and Third Avenue South (formerly known as "Old Main" due to its importance in early community life). The other side features a mix of residential homes dating back to before World War II up through recent times; many are single family homes dating from after 2000s when home ownership started decreasing nationally due to suburbanization or migration elsewhere for work or other reasons

Claytons first store was built on Main Street in 1827. A post office called Clayton was established in 1830, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. In 1839, the town had a population of only 20 people. It grew rapidly during the 1840s and 50s due to the discovery of coal mines near by. By 1860, Clayton had a population of 350 people. The town continued to grow through the late 19th century and into the early 20th century as shale mining became more common in central Ohio. By 1920, Clayton boasted a population of 2,500 people.
