In 1884, a group of men from nearby Toledo chopped down trees to build the first brick building in Clayton. Clayton, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ross County. The population was 25,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH-MI Combined Statistical Area. Clayton was founded by William Clayton in 1809 as a small community on the Scioto River in present-day Ross County. The town became an important transportation hub for goods and passengers traveling between Cleveland, Akron and Middletown, Indiana before becoming a fully cotton town in 1865 when it became part of the United States Army's Fort Pickering Military Reservation. With its strategic location near both routes that passed through central Ohio and its strong agricultural base, Clayton grew rapidly during the 19th century into one of America's leading cotton towns. By 1900, much of Clayton had been destroyed by fire but remnants such as school buildings and churches remain to this day. In 1960, following annexation by Cleveland from Ross County, Clayton incorporated as a city under its own laws with a population of just over 20,000 residents today – making it one of America's smallest cities Official City status has not been granted to any other American city since 1978! In 2002 Mayor Tom Barrett led city officials to pursue program goals including reducing crime rates while also focusing on investments like expanding public parks; creating new jobs; increasing access to economic opportunities;and improving infrastructure such as more than doubled streetlights and installation of new water mains within five years! Today’s Clayton is home to several major employers including IKEA (formerly JCPenney), General Motors' Mackinac Plant (now Cargill) and Ford Motor Company’s Toledo Assembly Plant (now Parma).

Clayton, Ohio is a small town in the heart of the United States. It is located in far eastern Ohio on the southern edge of the Appalachian Mountains and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three hundred years. The town was first settled by families from Pennsylvania in 1795. In 1814, General John Custer marched his army through Clayton on their way to battle against the Sioux Indians. The general's force encountered resistance from local militia, and as a result, most of Custer's men were killed or captured. For many years, Clayton was known as "The Ghost Town". After the Battle of Little Bighorn, which occurred near Clayton in 1876, many soldiers and civilian settlers abandoned the town. In 1881, when Ohio repealed its infamous Mud Act - which had legalized polygamy - Clayton became one of only two towns in America to do so. It remained that way until 1959 when it became part of Jackson Township.
Clayton was founded in 1795 by John Clayton and his wife, Elizabeth. The first post office at Clayton was established on July 1, 1810. The town became a port of call for the Western Reserve Express Company, which transported goods from Cleveland to Buffalo and other destinations over the Ohio River. In 1811, John Clayton donated land to build a school in honor of his daughter-in-law Catharine Chandler. The new school was dedicated on October 15, 1812.
