Clayton, Ohio is a small town in the state of Ohio located about 85 miles northeast of Columbus. The population was 9,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton-Muncie- Springfield, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clayton was named for General George Washington Clay, who fought in the War of 1812 and was brevetted brigadier general after that campaign. A post office called Clayton had been established in 1811, but moved to its current location in 1892. The first settler in Clayton was John Dickson. He platted what is now Clayton and built a store on the site in 1823. The town started to grow rapidly after this and by 1830 it had 10 stores and 100 residents. In 1836, Richard Green opened up his own grocery store here which became one of the most important businesses in town. By 1840, there were 25 stores and 300 residents here. By 1850, all but two of these stores had closed; however, with booming trade coming due to new railroads being built nearby (the Harrison Canal), the number of businesses reopened grew steadily until 1860 when only four remained open statewide - three within Clayton itself and one additional outside it as well as two other villages within Dayton-Muncie- Springfield boundaries - making it difficult for any newcomer to establish themselves commercially without some previous business experience or relationship with an existing business owner/manager residing there already! During this time period as well another commercial center emerged around what is now I-670 on the eastern edge of town (later known as Painted Post Road). This area became an important market for goods coming into Athens County from southern Indiana through central Ohio during this time period because wagon roads then existed linking Cincinnati via Akron & Toledo & Cleveland (& later Youngstown) with Lexington & Manchester (now Indianapolis) down through Kentucky & Tennessee before arriving at Nashville near Clarksville TN where buyers could be found before resuming their trip downriver again! There were also large sawmills located along what are now I-670 & US Route 521 just east of town limits; these mills produced boards, lumber etc., which were used both locally and exported throughout much of America! The decline during this time period can be partially attributed to increased competition from newer arrivals such as German Americans working westward on Ulysses S Grant's Union Pacific Railroad who began buying land near downtowns throughout America including parts of Claytowns along I-670 beginning around 1870 resulting in waves of immigration (primarily Slovaks) moving into the area making local businesses struggling financially; however also numerous natural disasters hitting Ohio during this time period like floods associated with Hurricane Andrew which devastated central Ohio early in 1990 resultant in many jobs lost away from townsfolk&families alike! It wasn't until World War II that things began to change back somewhat – starting with steel production increasing prevalent here due to WWII shortages caused by bombings Japan ensuing difficulties finding similar quality materials elsewhere – responsible for reversing declines seen earlier though still not reaching levels experienced prior!! In recent years rapid growth has resumed resulting primarily from economic development brought about by improved transportation links thanks mostly to Monmouth County becoming connected directly via Interstate 64 rather than routing thru Dayton MUNCIE INTERSTATE ALLOWANCE CENTER thereby allowing more accessages inland while less need exists for travel thru downtown areas creating more job opportunities!!!!
