Clayton was a town in Wood County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in Clayton were white men from Maryland and Virginia who founded a farm in 1795. They named their settlement "Mint Hill". The name originated with American silver coins that were highly valued at the time. In 1814, they sold their land to the United States government for $25,000. The U.S. military built an artillery battery here in 1815 and called it Fort Mifflin after Colonel John Brown's fort near Philadelphia which had been burned by British troops two years earlier. In 1830, a group of five investors purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) of land east of what is now Cleveland and began to build a community called "Clayton" on the site of what is now downtown Clayton Heights. The first building constructed in Clayton was a log cabin known as "The White House". In 1836, Mayor James Ketchum ordered surveyors to begin marking off lots for streets and houses so that developers could start selling homes. By 1840, there were over 100 homes within walking distance of downtown Clayton." The first store opened in 1830 along with several other businesses including blacksmiths, teachers' studios and insurance agencies before becoming a millinery store around 1850 when cotton became more popular as an export commodity Mayor Ketchum also financed construction of faster streetcars which allowed citizens to get closer to their jobs without having to walk long distances When railroads arrived in America during the late 1800s they brought new technologies such as electric cars which made transportation much easier for people living close to cities
