The first people to inhabit this area were the Potawatomi Indians. In 1813, landowner James Wilkinson donated 8 acres (3 ha) of his farm to the townsite development movement as a model village for rural residents in search of better living conditions. The town site name originated from an Indian word meaning "place where two rivers meet." In 1819, when Ohio became a state, Clayton was incorporated as a village and then as a city in 1823. The first mayor was Hiram Sibley and it had a population of just over 100 people. It grew rapidly with new construction starting up around this time including an mills on Wabash River which manufactured cottonens and yarns for export to England and other countries. By 1830, Clayton had become one of the most populous cities in Ohio with over 1,000 people living there. Continued growth led toxton's incorporation into Muskingum County on March 15th, 1837. By 1850, Clayton had reached its peak with 905 residents; however close economic competition from Pittsburgh led to increased manufacturing output away from home which caused many businesses failure within 10 years or so; making it one of America's largest areas without any major industrial base by 1870 despite continuing rapid growth in population1 On July 4th 1865 local resident John Mapes set off fireworks that went off near downtown while celebrating Ulysses S Grant's inauguration as president2
