In 1865, George Stephenson built the first steam locomotive in America at nearby Bellefontaine Junction; this engine helped make possible much of what later made up Dayton's commercial district and transportation infrastructure. The railroad reached its peak popularity during World War I when it served as a main artery for munitions moving into and out of Europe; however, after the war ended, railroads declined throughout Ohio due to competition from automobiles and other modes of transportation. A new express railway line was constructed through Dayton to Columbus in 1925 with support from President Calvin Coolidge; this route led to high levels of development around downtown Dayton but also resulted in many small towns being lost to annexation by larger cities such as Columbus or Cincinnati (the so-called "Great American Merger"). However, since then growth has been sporadic as automobile use has increased while heavy industry has left townspeople jobless or relocated elsewhere within their community – although steel production once again resumed within central Ohio following a plant closure). Today few residents remain who remember those early days when Dalton Road ran directly through downtown and Midland Avenue connected Turnpike Plaza with Allentown about one mile away eastward (today's First United Methodist Church building can be seen on Delaware Street across from Central Market). Downtown streetscape reflects today's suburban form with large numbers of McMansions housing commuters commuting into central business districts (including major chain stores) while smaller storefronts provide remnants of an earlier era when Ottowa Avenue paralleled Main Street just west of downtown (now Interstate 71 Business Loop).
