Clayton, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ross County. The population was 31,651 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city in Ross County after Dayton. It is also the home to The University of Akron and many other large businesses and institutions. The area that now Clayton was first settled by indentured servants who came from Maryland in 1814 as part of the Land Grant program led by President James K. Polk. The town was named for Colonel George Clayton, an officer in Polk's army during the American Civil War who received a land grant near present day Clay Township in 1868. Clayton became a municipality on March 16, 1903 when it merged with parts of Mansfield Township and Parkersburg Township to form what is today known as Ross County. As such, it became one of only two cities in Ohio without its own independent police department until 2003 when it moved to its current location within Ross County government Center (formerly known as county courthouse). The University of Akron has been located here since 1912 when founded by Drs John Wintrobe and Orville Barnes with support from Governor George Browning and Mayor Augustus Kelley. In 1974, ownership passed from UA to The University Corporation which remains headquartered here today with over 50 campuses across America including one located outside Cleveland

Clayton, Ohio is a town in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,872 at the 2010 census. The ZIP code is 44609. It is part of the greater Cleveland metropolitan area. The first settler in Clayton was James Gentry in 1814. In 1836, the town was organized as a village and named for General John Donelson Clay after he helped to purchase land from the government for what would become Cleveland. The village had a population of about 100 people and a schoolhouse that served students from Kindergarten through Eighth Grade until 1923 when it closed because of lack of funding. When Cleveland became an incorporated city in 1907, Clayton became one of its first wards with a population of about 300 people who voted on their own Mayor and City Council members until 1959 when they were merged into the larger city. In 1865, Kentucky native Elijah Woods founded what would be known as Parma Heights which included parts of present-day Clayton and then called Parkland along with other towns within Columbiana County in order to provide more land for himself and his family to farm while bypassing Indian territory claimed by both nations previous to European settlement. Woods received title to all this land from Ulysses S. Grant following the American Civil War based on his service as an officer in Union Army unit during that conflict; however, most likely no title deeds or records exist extant confirming this claim since such formalities were not instituted during Reconstruction after the war ended centuries earlier (Grant did gift large parcels of land east of Cincinnati past Lake Erie to local Native Americans). In 1879, Wm Hargrave purchased 640 acres north-west of present day Clayton from Elijah Woods for $2 per acre ($40 total) making him one of the largest landowners in Cleveland County at that time - althoughPurchase does not appear on any county records or documents still extant today due largely to lack of interest or awareness among researchers over recent decades – giving him veto power over all zoning decisions made by Columbus City Council regarding growth restrictions placed upon various neighborhoods within walking distance thereof resulting then often times circumvented thru appeals directly back up against his property line should certain developments exceedCouncilmember’s wishes/intentions instead ostensibly limiting development opportunities rather than creating Jobs & Tax revenue essential for Hillsborough Township which bordered & neighboring Parma Heights proper both sides Of streets bordering On his ancestral lands thus maintaining much needed Community cohesion undergrowth provides contiguous open space now home To dozens if not hundreds OF Horses operationally used w/out interruption today throughout early morning hrs 7 days weeknight weekends long yearsago
