Clayton is a city in the United States of America, located in the central part of the state of Ohio. The population was 38,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat and largest city in Summit County. The name Clayton comes from John Clayton, who settled there in 1806. The first Europeans to visit this area were French traders and fur-traders seeking access to Native American land. On November 24, 1795, George Rogers Clark founded what is now Cincinnati with his group of soldiers as a waystation on their attempt to find a route to China through those lands. This site became known as Clarksville after Colonel George Rogers Clark's father-in-law and namesake, James Robertson (1759-1825). The town was named for John Clayton, who had come to survey this land for the United States government in 1806 when it was included within Ohio Township under its present territory. In 1819, President James K. Polk issued an Executive Order declaring all Indian Claims Settlement Act treaties void which led to numerous skirmishes between Ulysses S. Grant's army and Native American groups culminating with General Crook's march on November 25th that year into what is now Ross County (now Wabash County), Indiana Territory overland from Illinois Territory across the Great Lakes region during what has been called "The Great Sioux War". A treaty negotiated by Tecumseh following hisraidy campaign resulted in most of these tribes ceding some land including much of modern Claytown along with other areas east of State Route 422 near Uniontown including parts today known as West Hillsboro and East Hillsborough Township

Clayton, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio that was founded in 1814. It is the seat of Lucas County and is located on the Mahoning River. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. Clayton's history can be traced back to 1814 when it was part of the Northwest Territory which became Kentucky after the Louisiana Purchase by United States President James K. Polk in 1803. In 1825, Clayton was renamed to honor General John Ayer Clay after he won an election as governor of Kentucky from behind bars. After Clay's death in 1830, his widow, Eliza Clay took over governance of her husband's town and led it for many years until her death in 1857 aged 83 years old. Clayton has several buildings and sites associated with its history including: Ayer Hall (1824-27), Fort George Wright (1795-1800), Indian Mission House (1821), Methodist Episcopal Church (1830), Masonic Lodge No 2 (1912-15), Blacksmith Shop No 1 (1820) and Old National Bank Building (1902). In addition, there are numerous gravesites located throughout Clayton such as those of Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest and Jesse James during their time as outlaws in western Kentucky during the 1860s; US Representative Thaddeus Stevens who died while serving overshot his term on Capitol Hill; Sir Humphrey Gilbert Scott who settled here around 1800; Confederate general Stonewall Jackson who died nearby while leading troops into battle at Perryville Creek on July 12, 1863; Union general David Hunterwho also fought at Perryville Creek; local historian Vernon McGee whose book "The History of Lucas County" was published in 1978; and artifacts from various periods including items associated with early American settlement such as land grants from President George Washington.;
