Clayton, Ohio is a small town in far northeastern Ohio. The population was 10,529 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern edge of Sandusky County and is bordered by Mentor to the east, Muskegon Heights to the north, and Licking Township to the west. The community is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Clayton were migrants from New England who arrived around 1795. They erected log cabins near what is now downtown Clayton and began farming land that they acquired through purchase or gift. By 1830, most of the original settlers had died from natural causes or war with Native Americans. A group of men led by Nicholas Crouch bought 640 acres (248 hectares) south of downtown Clayton in 1832 for $10 per acre ($2 million in 2019 dollars). They named their new settlement "Mentor". In 1836, they built a sawmill and gristmill on Holmes Creek which provided power for their mills until it burned down in 1837. For a time, they relied on wood imported from Canada but this became increasingly difficult to find and procure due to increasing transportation costs mandated by state regulation during the depression era. In 1840, Jno. Kapp organized a farmers' association in Mentor which helped promote better marketing practices among local farmers and developed cooperative relations with other villages across northeast Ohio including Ashtabula (now Akron), Xenia (now Toledo), Euclid (now Cleveland), Marietta (now Dayton), Canfield (now Wooster), Steubenville (now Youngstown), Parma (now Conshohocken), Defiance (now Alliance City), Hubbardston(later Mahoning City), Athens(later Canton)), Ballport(later Bay Village)) for goods delivered into northern Indiana via Lake Erie; these shipments increased when steamboats became available between Cleveland and Buffalo starting about 1850.. In 1860, John Sibley founded an agricultural cooperative known as The Sibley Packers Association which grew into one of Northeast Ohio's largest food processors.. After buying back his shares from others who had sold them out during stockmarket crash of 1888 (), he reopened his company as The Sibley Company (). During World War II many veterans returned home after serving abroad and started businesses such as those mentioned earlier: The Sibley Packers Association (), John Kapp's Sons Co., Northern Tool Works (), Navy Yard Mills (), American Metal Works (), Wm Hurlbut & Sons Indies Ltd., Hurlbut Rubber Company (). From 1946 to 1990 many industries closed down including steel mills () but other businesses such as clay products still operate today such as Claytons Incorporated (). Most recently there has been resurgence in arts and crafts industry with new retailers opening up along North Main Street ().
Clayton was founded in 1788 by a group of pioneers led by John Clayton. It became a town in 1802. The first courthouse was built in 1806. In 1817, the township was incorporated as a village. The first mayor was James A. White and the first clerk was Abram Copley. The village had five streets and one square block with a population of about 150 people.
