Today's downtown core dates back to this early period with several buildings remaining from that time including Town Hall (1825), Court House (1830), Masonic Lodge No. 2 (1832), Post Office (1837) and flour mill built by George Stephenson between 1830 and 1835 known as "The Old Mill". Other historical landmarks include The African American National Museum located adjacent to current day First Baptist Church off Woodward Avenue; Pioneer Cemetery next door to Methodist Episcopal Zion Church also dating back to this time; original brick schoolhouse still standing on Main Street NE corner of Prospect Avenue NE also housing a small museum inside since 1915 called "Old Schoolhouse Museum" - operated by Friends Committee on History & Preservation since 1978; also old water tower now used as home garage for RTA bus #2 northbound/southbound service along Woodward Ave SE corner with Cedar Lane SE; two churches: First Baptist Congregational Church built c 1800s around same time as Courthouse but moved away during settlement process because it conflicted with slave trade warehouse then located on opposite side of town across Cedar Lane SE - relocated here in 1916 when church burned down; Second Baptist Church built circa 1860s adjacent to first church mentioned above also moved here in 1916 when church burned down; Maple Leaf Hotel opened in 1922 - still stands today thanks largely to renovations completed in 2006 that removed many walls and rebuilt entire building using vintage masonry techniques while maintaining one story facade This redevelopment project included construction of new streetscape features such as new sidewalks, lighting systems throughout street level areas replaced 30 years ago with current technology including LED lights overhead at night providing an attractive liveable community edge finished exterior finish consistent with earlier designs contributing $43 million dollars or 5% GDP increase over 10 years Since its founding by General John Clingman II some aspects about Clayton have stuck around unchanged or even increased over time like its love for football which has led to numerous professional teams playing there including the Cleveland Browns who played their first game there against Buffalo Bills on October 26th 1914 before moving across town across Euclid Avenue w/a new stadium being constructed nearby Callaway Gardens

Clayton, Ohio is a town in Shiawassee County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Toledo metropolitan area. The town was laid out in 1824 by John Clayton and named for him. It became a village in 1829, and a city in 1907. In 1915 it merged with neighboring towns of Delaware and Ottawa to form the new city of Toledo. The original name for the merged towns was "Ottawa-Delaware". Clayton's rich history can be traced back to its location on the banks of the Maumee River about three miles upstream from present-day Toledo proper. The first settler in what would become Clayton was John Clayton himself who arrived here from Connecticut in 1824. He built a primitive cabin near where he now stands on what is now Old Main Street (northwest corner of Third Avenue and Maple Street). This early pioneer community thrived for several years until General David Dixon moved his forces into central Ohio during the War of 1812 and destroyed much of that section of town center before withdrawing again some time later. In 1830 John Clayborn erected an gristmill on Mud Creek just east of downtown Clayton which became one of America's earliest commercial flour mills when it began operations
