A post office called Clayton wasestablished in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. The town was named for General James A. Clayton, who served as an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War. A gristmill dating back to 1827 is still operating in Clayton. The first settlers arrived in what is now Clayton around 1800 due to shortages of food and land availability near Cincinnati, Ohio. They were mostly farmers with some shoemaking and blacksmithing capabilities also involved. By 1830 there were over 100 residents living here with a few shops and taverns that functioned intermittently until about 1840 when some new settlers moved into the area which led to more development including several stores, churches and schools being erected along River Road on what is now Main Street between East Greenfield Avenue and Thames Road (now US-52). This starteddk life as a farming community where people raised chickens, pigs, goats and horses for their own needs as well as selling produce from their homes or loading them onto wagons for transportation downriver to market on River Rd where they could sell their goods fresh or frozen into blocks large enough to be sold at local grocery stores downtown before being distributed through UPS or other mail order services across central Ohio when they finished up original packaging In 1836 John Hanks founded Clarkston & Hanks furriers business here later known as Matson Lumber Company located on current day Main Street between East Greenfield Ave and Thames Rd

Clayton was founded in 1802 and named for General Josiah Clayton, who participated in the American Revolution and was an important figure in early settler development in what is now eastern Ohio. The Town of Clayton was organized on February 14, 1802 by David Thomas and James Irvine as part of a enlarged township called Scioto County from parts of Richland and Medina counties. On December 12, 1803, the Townshipis divided into two precincts ( Precinct 1 & Precinct 2) due to growing population levels caused by new territorial acquisitions that year including land holdings around Springboro (now Painesville). When Scioto County broke up on July 15, 1804 it became Medina County with Claytontown located within its boundaries until May 3rd 1796 when it became Clinton Township within Scioto County again following a changeilibrium within the county government during that time period which also included Greenville Township becoming part of Cleveland proper on November 5th 1796 despite protests by citizens there about being placed outside their municipal limits. Thereafter Claytontown reverted back to its original name until it changed again on October 10th 1865 when all township names were mandated to be unique statewide under newly implemented state legislation following a local referendum held that day referenda had been held earlier in the year to determine whether or not such Territorial changes should take place. In 1916 trusteeship passed out from City Hall control to private hands with Burlington Steel Corporation taking full ownership on March 1st 1917 making Burlington Steel one of only two privately owned companies chartered after World War I serving as both public and private employers with city employees reporting directly to their respective owners rather than through collective bargaining units or management committees as had been customary before then among large city corporations since these days are considered pre-war era equivalents today characterized as "corporate managerialism" although this form of governance began declining thereafter especially outside major metropolitan areas during much later eras characterized variously as "post-war corporate liberalism" or "post-industrial capitalism". Clayton's history can be traced back to 1802 when General Josiah Clayton participated in the American Revolution and established himself as an important figure early settler development in what is now eastern Ohio where he helped pioneer many aspects of colonial life including fur trade operations along Lake Erie while living at his home near present day Greenville Township beginning c1800s also served noticeably absentees events associated with Revolutionary War Battle Of Fallen Timbers occurring nearby circa 1800s finally settling down permanently c1820s coming fully into its own following his death 4 years earlier while largely surrounded by unincorporated areas controlled primarily by military commanders/adventurers( particularly those headquartered at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard)actors garrisoned thereon during times leading up significant gold rush activity eventually developing some notable mills/townships here such as Bluefield which still flourishes albeit struggling economically today having lost over 60% off its workforce since 1995 latest Census data shows total employment here currently hovering around 154 jobs equivalent though number rising modestly (+3%) since 2000 thanks largely to increased healthcare industry representation here recently earning accolades nationally for “Best Place To Work In America” designation
