Clayton was founded in 1836 by Nano and Anna Clayton as a log cabin settlement on the Scioto River near modern day Mentor. The community grew rapidly due to its location and natural resources; it became an important center for transportation and commerce during the 19th century. In 1875, Clayton merged with neighboring townships to form one large township under the name of "Clayton Township". The village of Clayton began to grow around this time and eventually incorporated as a city in 1898. During World War II, Clayton became an important manufacturing center for munitions production due to its proximity to Battle Creek Naval Ammunition Plant and other war-related facilities. After the war, however, many businesses closed or moved away from Claytontown because of economic decline. In recent years, much development has taken place in Claytontown; including a new shopping mall, several restaurants and stores, and a new high school constructed in 2006 that has become known as one of the most popular schools in Dayton area
