Clayton is a city in Morrow County, Ohio, United States. The population was 14,509 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Dayton metropolitan area. The first European settler to come to Clayton was John Lennon in 1814 and he named it after his childhood home, Clayton House on the Hill in Liverpool, England. In 1870, Daniel Hinton laid out a township that included what is now Clayton Township and built a gristmill there on the banks of the Mayflower Creek. The mill was replaced by an enlarged gristmill built by George Muhlenberg in 1892 and this mill still stands along with several other buildings in Clayton today. In 1875, John Fenton platted what would become parts of Morrow County and named it after him – Clay Township. That same year saw the opening of the first post office in Morrow County – located at present-day Parma Heights – which served as the county seat for most of its existence until consolidation with Cleveland in 1907 made it unnecessary. In 1902, local school superintendent Wm Epps donated land near downtown Clayton for use as a public school campus; enrollment began operation from that location on October 1 that year.
