In 1840, James Fenimore Cooper came through the area and published his novel "The Pioneers", which inspired people to move to Clayton from all over America. In 1860, newspaper publisher Julius Crain built a mill here that continued operating until it was destroyed by fire in 1937. In 1907, when Cleveland metropolitan area growth led to new demands for space within the limits of its original boundaries, City Council decided that Clayton would become an independent city with its own government and police force under Mayor John Ahern (1907-1920). The first mayor of Claytons new city government was Vicky Hartzog (1989-2007). Today, Claytons downtown district features several businesses including four restaurants (including one owned by Apple Inc.), three banks - One United Bank & Trust Company, First National Bank of Cleveland and Wells Fargo - as well as two health clubs - Kessler Health Center and Midtown Wellness Center - as well as several small retailers including Macy's Department Store chain and JCPenney Co., along with two bowling alleys: Summit Bowling Alley on Main Street and Greater Heights lanes on North High Street.
