In 1817, General James Wilkinson settled here and helped found the town. He was a military officer who had played a major role in the War of 1812 against Canada. The town grew rapidly during its early years and by 1830 it had a population of 2,000 people. By 1840, however, the population had decreased to 600 due to factors such as high taxes and lack of economic opportunities. However, local businesses continued to thrive until the mid-19th century when new transportation methods made farming more difficult and transportation costs increased dramatically. In 1851, George Gresham donated land for what would become Claymont Park which still stands today. This park is home to many activities including baseball and soccer games as well as concerts and other events throughout the year. A number of interesting historic buildings also remain in Claymont including Gresham's Store which has been preserved as an historical landmark since 1984 and still functions as a commercial business today; Gresham House which served as both headquarters for the town government from 1830 until 1865;and finally Claymont Hall which housed many local officials throughout its history before being demolished in 1922 because it no longer met fire codes modern day requirements . Additionally, several churches have also been erected here throughout Claymont's history including First Baptist Church (1834), Second Presbyterian Church (1853), Methodist Episcopal Church (1860), LutheranChurch (1907) and CatholicChurch (1969).
