Airguns continued to be used in America until the late 1800s when they were replaced by artillery weapons such as cannons and muskets.

Clayton is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ross County. The population was 5,611 at the 2000 census, making it the fifth-largest city in Ross County and one of its most populous municipalities. It is also one of the largest cities in Greater Cleveland, with a population of 992,821 as of July 2016. Clayton is home to two universities: Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland State University. The first settler in what is now Clayton Township was John Ballou on November 3, 1788. He named his plat after James Caldwell, 2nd Baronet who had settled near present day Youngstown, Ohio on a tract that was part of Ottawa County east of modern Painesville. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson purchased land from Ballou for $10 per acre (0·7 hectares). When he became president in 1828, he ordered construction began on the Erie Canal which would connect New York City with Toledo through Clay County[1]. In 1830, Clay Township was organized by an act of the Ohio General Assembly under the name "Fremont Township". The township office moved from Fenton to Clayton in 1834 when it was annexed by Fremont Township.[2] A schoolhouse operated here until 1870 when it burned down and replaced by a new building which still stands today (it has been restored) and is used as headquarters for the local government divisions for Ross County including police services,[3][4][5] zoning services[6], firefighting service[7], social services[8][9], waste management services[10] and other community functions such as job training programs for locals.[11] In 1898–99 ground was broken on what would become Case Western Reserve University’s first campus site just west of downtown Clayton; this marked an important milestone for CWRU as it became one of America’s leading universities. In 1828, John Aiken opened a store in Clayton and soon became one of the most successful merchants in the area. In 1830, he married Sarah Goode and together they started a grocery store that would survive until 1971. After Sarah's death, John took on new ownership of the business and it continued to grow until it closed its doors for good in 1971. Clayton has experienced many different types of businesses over its history including clothing stores (Cleveland Store Company), auto dealerships (John Aiken Automotive) and real estate (The Goode & Cochran Real Estate Co.). It also hosted an annual fair known as "The Great American Fair" which featured exhibits from all over America between 1907-1911. The fair helped promote tourism in Clayton and also generated income for local businesses who sold food, amusements, souvenirs and other items at the event. Today there are still some remnants of this pastFair such as several patriotic monuments located near downtown Clayton or special events held each year like The 5K Pumpkin Run run/walk which takes place on Halloween Nights around town!
Clayton was founded in 1811 by John Clayton and his family. The town was named for him and today it is the largest community in Summit County. In 1865, the town became one of the six townships in Summit County. In 1902, Clayton merged with neighboring unincorporated communities of Maple Heights and South Park to form a new municipality called "Clayton-South Park."
