Circleville is a city in Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Area. The town of Circleville was founded in 1817 by Methodist missionaries and traders as a small settlement on the Scioto River near what is now Trumbull County Courthouse Square. The name "Circleville" (from French cire meaning "silver") was given to it by its first postmaster, Hiram Fenton. In 1828, settlers from Grayslake built a log cabin on the riverbank and started to grow maize and beans for food. By 1830, they had built two more cabins and named their village after President James K Polk – Polk City – because he had visited their area twice during histerm as president. In 1833, Circleville became the county seat of Trumbull County after being selected by commissioners from different counties in central Ohio as the most promising location for an operational courthouse due to its strategic location on the Scioto River between two major trunkroads running through central Ohio: the Erie Canal and US-84/US-1/WT–27 (the Great Western Highway). The fledgling county government build its first building – a bank barn – within three years of becoming governmental affairs center with help from army veterans who had transferred from West Point during the War of 1812. Circleville is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the lower Miami River at its confluence with the Scioto River. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. The first European settlers in what is now Circleville were families from Holland and Belgium who arrived during the 17th century. They built cabins near what is now town's center and farmed land around present-day Lake Erie until 1812, when they moved to larger holdings in present-day central Ohio. The proposal gained national attention due to Joseph Smith's prophecy that white people would have to leave India if God ever gave up their lands to Indians – an event known asthe Great Mormon Migration (). In 1834–35, two SurveyorsGeneral made maps of much of northwest Ohio which included parts of modern-day Circleville Township (now Muskegon Heights). One map showed James Conley’s “Plaindealer” Road running through modern day Circleville leading southward out of village into township limits; while another map shown two buildings on Main Street being used as stores by George Hays & Co., also known as Hays Brothers store later home to Widespread’s department store chainHaley's mill". After these surveys were completed and published one local man stated:"I never did believe that those surveyors had such bad intentions towards us... we must have been mistaken about them". However many residents felt differently because there was no road connecting downtown with any other part of town." In 1840 Union troops burned down three homes along US 1 in modern day Muskegon Heights after capture by Confederate forces during the Battle of Perryville." The building where this took place still stands today next door to State Route 231A just inside Muskegon Heights limits." In 1861 when America declared war against Confederacy following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation American forces burned down several homes including one located adjacent to present day Council House Square but this property still stands today unoccupied ." By 1865 most residents had relocated away from military activity so development ceased withinCircleville limits ." A post office was established here on October 15, 1865 under the name "Cincinnati", however it closed operations on December 12th same year due primarily to lack postage stamps available at that time ."
