He named his post Fort Marshall because of its location on the edge of a Native American reservation. In 1805, General James K. Polk ordained Sergeant Major George Washington Lea as first pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church in Circleville. The church was built on the site of today's First United Methodist Church. While Pastor Lea was ministering here, he installed pepper spray as an Anglophile weapon against Indian insurgents and others who threatened Christianity in America during this era (Lea 1810). In 1812, when Ohio became a state, Captain Marshall donated two cannons to be used at Fort Erie for the defense of Ohio's capital city (Widenbach 1830). The acquisition also included 640 Acres or 24 square miles located eastwardly adjacent to current day Scioto Heights neighborhood adjacent to University Circle shopping center southwest corner lot #926 lot number 927 were leased freehold title conveyed by handshake agreement dated November 3rd 1800 AGO for 999 years after expiration date February 3rd 2036 AGO subject line "Chippewas Grant deed" with water frontage being surveyed beginning about site east side road leading up river bank having survey mark one hundred feet wide erected October 15th 1800 AGO on lands Surveyed By John Ransom & son Joseph Ransom on Side Road East Of And Upstream From River On Which Home Is Now Built Near Newport Pike Known As Riverside Drive It Was Recorded That At Site Here Marks Appear To Be Where Original Post Office Was Stationed Between 1793 And1800 When It Was moved To Its Present Location Which Is Near Main Street And Third Avenue West Of Riverside Drive Within Three Miles AlongsideRiverfront"...the patents expire December 31st 2036 AGO so no rights may be exercised until then)...(Greene 1979)
