Circleville is a small town in northeast Ohio, United States. It is the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 7,503 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1812 by General David Wilkinson and named for Circleville, England. It became a city in 1868 and remains an unincorporated community. The area that now makes up Circleville was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1812, General David Wilkinson discovered coal mines there and named the area "Circleville" after his home country, Circuit Court House being located nearby at what is now known as Wilkinson's Lane. The first settler to arrive in what would become Circleville was John Prentice on April 10, 1814. He built a cabin on a hill in what is today downtown Circleville and planted corn until he sold it to Wm Sutherlin two years later for $1 per acre (0.50ยข per bushel). By 1840, about eighty families had moved into what would eventually become Circleville from all over Northeast Ohio including Cincinnati and other parts of Indiana Territory; many more followed during the 1830s when gold was discovered near Akron and other townships were developed near Circlevillians began logging their land for lumber purposes In 1870, with the opening of the Erie Railroad through northeast Ohio,circlevilles many businesses grew rapidly thanks to its proximity to Cleveland which saw massive growth due to new industrial activity including breweries Chauncy & Co., American Tobacco Company (ATC), American Can Workshops Inc., Cleveland Carriage Works etcetera during this time period On November 3rd 1865, Circleville attained city status when it passed an act of incorporation by an overwhelming vote of 592-2 with only one dissenting vote This made Circleville one of twenty-one cities annexed into Cleveland within three years following its formation In 1899 Circleville annexing Hoyt Township completely formed another boomtown as steel production boomed due to neighboring Gary's emerging steel industry becoming world-renowned . However this boomtime photo opportunity proved shortlived as Hoyt Township reverted back to village form by 1907 while Steel City quickly overtook Ringgold as Cuyahoga County's largest manufacturing center . During World War II both Hoyt Township and Steel City were heavily bombed but no damage resulted from these bombings making them some of America's most resilient communities post-war During this time several professional athletes lived or grew up in Circlerville including basketball players Julius Erving (4th generation) & Rick Majerus (3rd generation) who attended school here before playing collegiately at Case Western Reserve University where they met each other ; pitcher Roger Clemens also spent some time here while growing up prior to entering college
