Circleville is a small town in central Ohio, United States. The population was 1,582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Clinton–Doddsville, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Circleville was founded in 1824 and has been located within the present-day city limits of Clinton since 1892. The first permanent settler in what is now Circleville was James Ritchie who built a cabin on the same site as today's hospital in 1824. A post office called "Ritchie" was established in 1827, but changed its name to "Circleville" in 1828 after owner John Wilkinson donated land for the village. The first school opened in 1830 and served students from nearby Griggsville until it closed in 1903. A new school opened on December 12, 1893 and served students from Circleville and eastern Clinton until itclosed on February 14, 2002 due to budget cuts by then Mayor Whitehurst. Circleville, Ohio is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 4,653 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is typically anglicized as "Clover Leaf". Circleville was founded by German immigrants in 1827 and named for the abundance of clover seen near their farmstead. The first post office in Circleville was established in 1829. In 1837, the town became part of the Uniontown Vandalia Township when that township was created from parts of Butler and Perry counties. The first school in Circleville opened on February 17, 1840. It operated under private auspices until 1862 when it became part of the Columbiana School District. In 1865, Circleville became one of the townships within Lawrence County which merged into Hamilton County.[1] In 1904-1905, residents voted to change their name to Clover Leaf to avoid confusion with neighboring towns such as Jenks and Clintonville which had similar names (Jenks being spelled "Jewel" while Clintonville was spelled "Clover").[2] The community continued to use Clover Leaf until 1957 when it changed its name again - this time to Circleville after a local grocery store owner donated land for that purpose.[3]

The circular drive around the cirque created an ideal place for a small community to be built, and so Circleville quickly became a popular spot for farmers and their families to live and work.
