In 1816, John Fenton moved to Circleville from Athens, Ohio and started a grocery store called Fenton's Corner Store. The first post office was established here on July 8th, 1816 under the name "Ottawa". The name of the city comes from Circleville Creek and its namesake creek. The first Europeans to visit this area were traders and travelers who came through this region in the early 1800s. They named the creek after General Joshua Reynolds (1663-1726), an American Revolutionary War general who was born in England and died in America. In 1824, Circleville was founded as a small community by Temperance Baptists following the great Methodist Revival of that year. In 1827, it became the county seat of Franklin County after it was chosen over Dayton because of concerns about transportation problems between those two cities. In 1835, a canal was built through Circleville to connect with Cincinnati via Watertown Heights on the west side of town. This development led to increased trade and commerce within and outside of Circleville and helped spur growth across central Ohio during that time period. AlthoughCircleville experienced some decline during World War II due to military activity around the area, overall its economy recovered quickly once hostilities ended more than fifty years later. Today, Circleville remains an important cultural center for central Ohio thanks to its vibrant arts scene and significant number of businesses which support local agriculture products
