The first settler to die in Circleville was James Fenton who died on November 15, 1846 after a long life spent farming and ranching near present-day Fort Thomas. The town grew rapidly due to its location beside two railroads: the Cincinnati and Dayton Railroad (now CSX) ran through it from north to south and the Erie Canal connected it with Cleveland. In 1850, John Dickson built what is now called "Dickson's Dome" on high ground overlooking Circleville proper; this became one of Circlevilles most important landmarks and remains an important focal point today. In 1857 Buffalo Bill Cody came to visit Circleville while on his way westward to lecture at Western University in Denver; he stayed at Dickson's Dome for four days before leaving for his next stop, Santa Fe Springs, New Mexico.circleville has been mentioned as a possible site for Cody's final resting place since that time

A large crowd had gathered around the small log cabin which served as his temporary home while he awaited election results in Illinois. In 1898, Circleville got its own postal service with First Class mail service to every house within a radius of 10 miles (16 kilometers).
