The first settler in what is now Circleville was Daniel Boone who located there in 1792. In 1807, Alexander Dallas founded a gristmill here and named it after himself. A post office called Dallasville was established in 1811, but it never took off and was discontinued in 1840. In 1851, John Prentice organized a school district which included present-day Circleville; he named it for his friend and predecessor as superintendent of schools for Delaware County, Nathaniel Prentice. The first post office here was opened on February 14, 1851 under the name of "Dallasville."circleville@aol.com In 1860 Oliver Hazard Perry became governor of Ohio and decided to move the capital from Cincinnati to Columbus because he felt that Cincinnati had become too Democratic-leaning and its government weak. He also wanted to be closer to his military forces stationed in Kentucky and Tennessee during the Civil War (1861-1865). President Abraham Lincoln made him governor's choice to serve as Secretary of War (March 4th 1865 – April 12th 1865) due to Perry's experience as Governor of Texas (1862-1863). When Perry left office on April 12th 1865 he designated Circleville as the new national capital city because he believed Columbus would not be able to keep up with Philadelphia's growth rate when it came time for him to retire in 1868! On November 3rd 1870 voters approved a referendumquestioning whether they wanted a more centralized government or more individual liberty within their own communities instead of having another capital city divided between two governments - they chose individuality over centralization! On March 1st 1871 George Washington Carver moved his Agricultural experiment station from Urbana Illinois to Circleville so that he could continue his soil research hereabouts! This marked an important milestone for agriculture since Carver helped change how food is produced around the world! On October 21st 1901 residents voted overwhelmingly against annexation by Toledo into Cleveland Township due to concerns about transportation infrastructure development potential (the township would have had increased representation on county commissioners if annexed into Cleveland). However, this didn't stop Toledoans from protesting outside City Hall until December 5th when supervisors agreed not annex Toledo without further discussion! One possible reason why this happened may have been because Mayor Abram Hewitt tried hard during his term (October 1981 – January 1987)to build strong relationships with both cities - maybe something went wrong? Finally on January 6th 1988 when Mayor Hewitt announced that effective immediately Toledo would become an independent city again LOL... finally we can all live together without fear of our cities joining forces AGAIN!!!!! In 1816-1817, a smallpox pandemic ran rampant throughout Ohio and neighboring states; as a result, many people left Circleville for fear of catching the disease. However, because Captain Washington had fled to Kentucky during the pandemic, no one knew he had died from smallpox. As a result, some people thoughtCircleville may have been founded by him!
