A post office was organized in 1851 under the name "Cleveland" but changed to "Circleville" due to objections from neighboring towns with similar names such as "Cleveland Heights" and "Hilliard". When Union forces burned down Fort Warren during the American Civil War on October 8, 1863, most residents fled northeast through Circleville towards Athens or Wooster where they hoped refuge would be found. Some people returned after General Ulysses Grant ordered an end to hostilities on November 3rd when all troops had withdrawn from Ohio except for a garrison at Fort Delaware near Cleveland. About 350 people lived incircleville at that time; however most left resumed their normal lives within two weeks after Union forces pulled back out of Ohio again. One resident who remained behind was Orville Husted who operated a sawmill on West Third Avenue until 1870 when he donated it to the town so that everyone could use it without fear of theft or damage by larger mills nearby.circleville history

circleville was founded in 1795 by a group of men who named themselves the Circleville Township Committee. The first settler, Nicholas Whiting, arrived in 1796. The township was organized on November 3, 1800. In 1802, it became part of Cuyahoga County. At its creation, circleville had a population of just over 100 people. It grew rapidly during the early years of the 19th century; by 1810, it had reached 1,200 people and was considered one of the most populous towns in Ohio. In 1814-15, an epidemic swept through central Ohio and killed many people in circleville and other towns along the route of the Great Lakes Erie and Niagara rivers. This event is also memorialized by a plaque erected at nearby Dunkin' Donuts coffee shop which reads "In Memory Of The Victims Of The Erie/Niagara Epidemic." During World War II,circleville made significant contributions to both hostilities and postwar reconstruction efforts. Many businesses were flooded with patriotic donations from citizens after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor; some stores remain open today as part of the town's cultural heritage (e.g., JB's Diner).
